Workshop Series | Cakras unplugged Feb 2022

What is it all about

If you have been practicing yoga for a while, you might have heard about the cakras and their “friends”, the nādīs (channels) and prāna (the energy moving in those channels). In ancient times, yogis believed humans were made of a complex physiological structure, but also an even more complex underlying structure, part of which is known as the cakras. To put it simply, energy travels through channels, and in certain places there are “crossroads” where these channels meet. These “crossroads” are the cakras.

Yogis also believed that emotional and physiological functions were associated with each cakra, thus explaining that  “dis-ease” (literally) would sometimes occur when these cakras were not in balance.

If you think this sounds a bit esoteric… that’s probably because it is! However, when we examine these models from a rational standpoint, strip them of their myths and link them with our yoga practice, there is much we can learn to deepen it and understand it from a new perspective.

Note: we spell ‘cakra’ to follow the correct transliteration of this Sanskrit word.

In each workshop,

  • a 45 minutes presentation on the cakra of the day
  • a one hour practice focused on the cakra of the day.
  • Time for Q&A

Note: a copy of the practice, along with self-observation guidelines, will be given to you each time, so you can continue to experiment with it on your own for the balance of the week.

  • Location of the cakra
  • Characteristics, functions and dysfunctions of the cakra
  • The cakra in relation to prāṇa (energy), āsana (yoga posture), prāṇāyāma (breath work)
  • Spiritual aspects and emotions associated with the cakra
